“We Bang” by Varion Laurent captures the feel and excitement of the Mid-City Bayou Boogaloo. It encapsulates the eclectic spirit of this year’s subject, “Tank and the Bangas” by placing them in canoes without paddles.
“I’ve personally known Tarriona “Tank” Ball since she was a shy yet super talented spoken word artist. I added the composition notebook on her lap as per her request to pay homage to her spoken word art which is also infused in her music. If you look on her finger there is a monarch butterfly. I added the butterfly to symbolize her metamorphosis and how the butterflies are no longer in her stomach because she has tamed them. I drew my inspiration from all of this and the nature that exists along the bayou to create a warm and fun composition that was an absolute pleasure to create!” – Varion Laurent
