Horns to Havana Community Concert
During Horns to Havana - Non-Profit New Orleans residency, we were pleased to sponsor a free community concert alongside CubaNOLA Arts Collective featuring the gifted young players from Havana’s Conservatorio Amadeo Roldán, whose jazz orchestra performed along with members of the Preservation Hall Jazz Band as part of their residency with the Preservation Halll Foundation.
The Amadeo Roldán Conservatory is Cuba’s premiere academy of music. The school was founded in 1903 and is located in a lovely neoclassical building in Central Havana, where it has been housed since 1942. Distinguished alumnae include Gonzalo Roig, Diego Bonilla and the great composer, orchestra leader and musician Amadeo Roldán, for whom the school is named. The school has trained many of Cuba’s most gifted musicians. Its influence extends around the world.
Horns to Havana is a New York City-based nonprofit that promotes cultural exchange between American and Cuban musicians. It assists Cuban cultural organizations with instrument donations and instrument repair. And it sends American musicians – like the New Orleans-born saxophonist Victor Goines – to Cuba to give instruction and mentorship. hornstohavana.org
