*Luciano Leães Releases New Album Recorded in New Orleans: A Tribute to R&B and Funk Traditions, Building Cultural Bridges Between the Americas Through Music*

With a profound respect for the legacy of New Orleans R&B and funk, Luciano Leães breathes life into his latest album as a celebration of the city’s musical greats. Inspired by icons like Professor Longhair, Allen Toussaint, Fats Domino, James Booker, and Art Neville, Leães skillfully blends these influences with the vibrant sounds of his Brazilian and Latin American heritage. This unique fusion not only honors New Orleans traditions but also builds a bridge connecting the soulful rhythms of the American South with the cultural richness of Latin America.

Recorded at Jake Eckert’s Rhythm Shack Studios, the album comprises 11 original tracks. Nine feature lyrics by Leães in collaboration with Tom Worrell and Sean Carey, while two instrumental pieces, FESSta Brasilis and Odila y Maneco, showcase his ability to merge New Orleans jazz and funk with Brazilian and Latin rhythms into a sound that is simultaneously timeless and innovative. Bassist Cornell Williams highlighted the collaborative spirit: "Luciano’s energy and vision make the music flow naturally. It’s been an honor to work with him." Drummer Terence Higgins summed up: "Luciano is one of the great musicians of our time. His devotion to New Orleans’ culture is unmatched, and his playing channels the spirit of the giants."

*A Journey Rooted in Tradition and Serendipity*

Recognized by the New Orleans Jazz Museum as probably the foremost New Orleans piano representative in South America, Leães has furthered his role as a global ambassador of the genre. His original compositions were featured live at the museum during International Jazz Day, solidifying his connection to the Crescent City’s enduring musical heritage. Leães’ journey has been one of serendipity and shared history. From meeting Pat Byrd, the daughter of Professor Longhair, to encounters with legends like Dr. John and Allen Toussaint, his bond with New Orleans runs deep. His hometown, Porto Alegre, shares remarkable parallels with New Orleans—both cities lie along the 30th parallel and have weathered devastating floods. "I feel like part of a big musical family here. Each trip is a whole lotta learning about music, culture and even about myself" Leães reflects, and that sentiment is echoed by Pat Byrd, who notes: "Luciano is one of the best pianists to interpret my father’s legacy. His presence here feels natural—he’s a part of our story." Over the past years, Leães has been a central presence in New Orleans’ piano celebrations, performing at events honoring Professor Longhair’s and James Booker’s birthdays. He has also been a constant figure at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, embodying the spirit of the city’s vibrant music scene.

*Honoring Family and Musical Roots*

Leães’ connection to music began in his childhood, surrounded by family traditions of piano playing and an extensive vinyl collection. His uncles Laquito and Ivan were early influences, playing piano passionately at his grandmother’s house. These memories inspired "Odila y Maneco", an habanera that pays tribute to his grandparents and the vibrant family life that shaped his artistry. By his 20s, Leães was performing alongside blues legends like Carey Bell and Hubert Sumlin during their Brazilian tours, gaining invaluable experience that set the stage for his career.

*Creating a Cross-Cultural Album*

The pandemic reignited Leães' desire to record a new album. Drawing from his Latin American roots and New Orleans’ deep musical traditions, he envisioned a project that celebrated their connection and the land he was missing. With musicians like Cornell Williams (bass), Terence Higgins (drums), Lionel Batiste Jr. (percussion), and John Fohl (guitar), the sessions became a seamless blend of cultures and creativity. Producer Jake Eckert commended Leães: "Luciano approaches New Orleans’ culture with mastery, respect, and love. His work is genuine, and he’ll always have a home at Rhythm Shack Studios."

*A Testament to Collaboration and Legacy*

The album also features lyrical contributions from Tom Worrell and Sean Carey, as well as dynamic performances by River Eckert, the prodigious son of Jake Eckert, with whom Leães performed intricate four-handed piano pieces during his performances in new orleans since he was even younger. Worrell describes the album as: "A confident stride into New Orleans’ funk temple. Luciano connects us to the grooves of The Meters, Dr. John, and Allen Toussaint while adding his own voice to the tradition."

*A Landmark Achievement*

Set for release in early 2025, this album marks a pivotal moment in Leães’ illustrious career. With its blend of R&B, funk, and Latin American influences, it promises to resonate across borders, building cultural bridges and honoring musical legacies. - Marcio Grings
